Product comparisons

In the July issue or Car and Driver three sports cars: a Lotus Evora, a Corvette GS, and a Cayman S were compared. Shockingly, the Cayman S had a glaring flaw, brake fade. This was a "press car" with 6,000 miles.
I have seen some blatant examples of Porsche models tortured by the press. One was a GT3 with no tread on the tires after 1,000 miles. Another was a 911 Turbo with warped rotors. Evidently there are journalists with neither driving skills nor respect for machinery. It has been said that at 7/10 one can experience a car's attributes; at 9/10 one can only concentrate on survival.
Each Porsche model must pass a rigorous test of accelerating to 90% of its top speed and brake to 62 mph 25 times in a row without experiencing any fade. Porsche's brakes are legendary.
PCNA needs to inspect these cars a little more closely. While they're at it, they should examine the way some these cars are equipped. You may recall the $130,855 Panamera S without sport chrono in the March 2010 Car and Driver.
By the way, both the Cayman S and the Panamera S won their comparisons. However, like college football, running up the score does help in the rankings.

Safety First

This year marks our 28th annual Ozark Tour, a road trip for Porsches. This will be the 40th organized road trip which would include West Texas. Our safety record, while not perfect, is to be commended. In the past three years we drove over 43,000 miles per ticket- 4 speeding tickets. Last year we had 50 cars and made 48 of them invisible.

We split into groups of no more than three. The groups are determined both by drivers of similar skill sets and desires, as well as similar Porsche models. No one is asked to drive outside their comfort zone. We depart at different times and have at least 15 different routes to lunch. To learn more about this one of a kind event, please call (281) 944-2122 or e-mail events@porscheofnorthhouston.com. You can also join us for breakfast June 12 9AM- 11AM.

The 911 Ranked #1 in Vehicle Satisfaction

According to a recent survey of 42,000 2010 model year vehicle owners, Porsche owners have ranked their 911 as The Best Sports Car in Satisfying Customers! Based on those results, the 911 won the 14th annual Vehicle Satisfaction award from AutoPacific. This is great news for Porsche and all potential Porsche 911 owners. Many times when people buy a car, they love it for a little while, but as time passes they become unsatisfied with their purschase. Not Porsche owners! A Porsche never becomes an old car, it becomes a classic. For more details about this prestigious award click here. To look into getting a new 2010 911 call us at (888)538-7513 or visit http://www.porscheofnorthhouston.com/.

Spyder Impressions

Three employees with at least a combined 100 years of Porsche experience all agree. The Spyder is the real deal. This is no sheep in wolf's clothing. The Spyder has a distinct look that separates it from a Boxster, but it's what's underneath its skin that makes it special.
The Spyder handles like it's on rails. It stays flat in the corners and is very predictable. Reports are now coming in from PCA driver education (track) programs that have the Porsche Sport Driving School instructors passing almost everything on the track. Yes, these are great drivers, but power to weight, center of gravity, weight distribution, suspension tuning, and everything else that comprises Porsche engineering makes the Spyder a giant killer. Historically, Porsche has used this same formula to achieve incredible feats in racing. There is a purity about the Spyder that transcends transportation. Jack McCall, Rodger Gay, and David Moore will all tell you the Spyder has won them over. This is the new weapon of choice for our annual assault on the winding roads of the Ozarks.

Your Porsche Moment

This classic commercial displays the raw emotion attached with the Porsche brand. It’s about a love, a fascination, an obsession for all things Porsche! When you decide that you want to be a Porsche owner, it’s a feeling and a moment you will never forget! We at Porsche of North Houston fully understand that because we’ve experienced it ourselves. This is one young man after our own heart. To give in to your Porsche calling, call us at (281) 944-2122.

Boxster Spyder: The Verdict Is In!

The verdict is in: the Boxster Spyder qualifies as an everyday driver. Houston has now experienced some of its torrential downpours. So far not a drop, excluding opening the door, has found its way into the Spyder. As I zipped up the interstate I watched the water curl around the A-pillars and land on the hydrophobic side windows. It danced along the line where the glass met the canvas top, but never managed to push beyond that line.

I was impressed as the Spyder progressed into Valentine 1 speeds. My take was even if it did leak, I would not be dissuaded from enjoying such a thoroughly entertaining Porsche. That was a compromise I didn't have to make. While the Spyder may be intended for purists, its owners need not enter the realm of masochism. Even those who may not consider themselves purists, can keep the Spyder on their list.
I can't say I know what a barrel of monkeys is like, but I'll bet the Spyder is more fun.

The 911 From A Customer's Perspective

We recently received this note from one of our clients, Bob S. from Houston. Bob gave us permission to share it on our blog with you! If you have a Porsche story you'd like to share, please email it to Jack McCall at jack@indigoporsche.com. Happy driving!
----------

OK, I read the WSJ's article on the 911 Turbo. Good piece. It inspired me to make one last ditch attempt to explain to you why before you go to that final Sales Conference In The Sky, you must own a Porsche:

As I think I told you, my first real Porsche encounter was in 1994 at Skip Barber's at Sears Point. Porsche was filming a TV commercial and had five identical black 911Turbos on the track. I was watching them film during my lunch break, when Hurley Haywood, head of the Porsche racing program, walked over to me. Hurley Haywood! I introduced myself, trying hard to remember my name. He smiled and extended his right hand, not to shake mine, but to offer me a set of car keys. "Ever drive a Turbo?" he asked. I shook my head "no" and he continued, "Have a good time, keep the shiny side up, and stay on the track. We need it back in 30 minutes.". Oh-My-God. He pointed to the one on the end, and I walked -- no ran, before he could change his mind -- to the designated Turbo. I was wearing a Skip Barber one-piece racing coveralls, and gloves, so I was READY. Hot air was rising off the tarmac, just like in a Tom Cruise movie. Where is the percussion soundtrack when you need it?

This thing was pure sex: Beautiful, dangerous, mysterious, unavailable, athletic, and smelled like new leather and Mobile 1. I could feel my heart in my ears. Gotta keep the shiny side up. Hell, gotta not make an a-hole of myself.

I sat in it, buckled myself in, adjusted the seat and mirrors, inserted the key, and turned... Gawd, what a sound. I tweaked the pedal and the revs climbed from idle to 5500 in milliseconds. I looked around at the all-black leather interior. It looked like it had been carved out of a solid block of black granite. Felt like it, too. This thing, I thought, was not made on some assembly line, but by a few hands. It was PERFECT. It's a surgical instrument with sound effects!

I slipped it into first gear, SLOWLY let out the clutch, and exited the paddock area, heading for the start/finish line. The exhaust whispered a warning: I am not for amateurs. I will kick your ass, sonny.

The next 20 minutes were a blur of adrenaline, squealing tires, and disbelief. This machine is AMAZING. Acceleration forever. Brakes that stop so quickly they leave you in yesterday. Steering that can thread a needle. One thought began to emerge, starting quietly in the back of my head, getting louder, and moving slowly to my frontal cortex: I need one of these, now!

I drove back to the paddock area, now fairly confident, parked THE MACHINE next to the others, turned the engine off in a deliberate way, and exited. I walked a few paces away, and turned to look back at The Machine. The thought now completely filled my head. I couldn't hear anything else: I need one of these, now! I walked towards Haywood, who was busy talking to a cameraman. He looked at me, as I handed him the keys. He didn't ask the obvious question: "So, how'd you like it?". Nope. He just said, " OK. You have that look on your face. I get that a lot. I'll bet you own one before the end of the month." I mumbled a thank you, something about a lot of money to spend, something about lack of luggage room. He nodded and returned to the cameraman.

He was wrong on two counts: I bought a Carerra 4S, not a Turbo. And it was way before the end of the month. I have never been without a Porsche in my garage, since.

I drive my Porsche almost every day. And when I do, I never think about luggage room, or how much it costs. I’m just glad they still make them.

You only live once. Buy yourself a 911 while you can still enjoy it. I promise you, there is no substitute.

Bob

The Boxster Spyder is truly a driver's car. Porsche has taken "systems engineering" to new heights with the Spyder. A spread sheet evaluation can't begin to tell you what a great car this is. While the Spyder clearly wasn't intended to be something for everyone, it most certainly can be everything to someone.
Not having pushed a car recently, the Spyder begs to be driven. It actually makes commuting fun. If anyone thinks Porsche forgot how to build a true sports car, drive the Spyder. It will connect you directly and instantly to the driving experience as it was intended. Rolling a tire over a quarter, one could discern whether or not it was heads or tails. At the same time, the ride is not punishing and the top is liveable. The Spyder's beauty is much more than skin deep.

Accolades For Porsche of North Houston

As some of you already know, we sponsor all of the local Lone Star Region Porsche Club Of America events, so we were thrilled to get this letter from the National Club!

April 20, 2010

Mr. Todd Blue
Porsche of North Houston
18111 North Freeway
Houston, TX 77090

Dear Mr. Blue:

At the recent Lone Star Region Porsche Club of America (LSRPCA) Club Race, I had the opportunity to visit with Rodger Gay while checking out the Porsche models on display along with dozens and dozens of other Porsche fanatics. I wanted to offer a sincere THANK YOU for sponsoring this year’s LSRPCA Club Race!

As a member of the national Executive Council for the PCA, I visit Club Races all over the United States and Canada. It is easy to see that the connection between a PCA Region and a specific Porsche Dealership is a win-win situation. The Lone Star Region, with over 1,000 primary members, is one of the largest of the 139 PCA Regions. It is obvious they are very proud to have Rodger as a member of the LSR Board and to have Porsche of North Houston as an advertiser in their newsletter. Seeing Porsche of North Houston as the premier sponsor of the Texas Two-Step Club Race was the icing on the cake!

Thank you again for your support of LSRPCA – the appreciation and respect for Porsche of North Houston among the membership is clearly evident.

Very best regards,

Caren Cooper
PCA National Secretary
