2011 Car and Driver 10 Best List: Boxster & Cayman

The 2011 Porsche Boxster and Cayman are once again listed on Car and Driver Magazine’s 10 Best cars sold in America. This year marks the 10th time in 12 years that either a Porsche Boxster or Cayman model has been named to this desirable list. Wow!  

"The Cayman and the Boxster still exemplify, even heighten, classic Porsche values such as a flat-six's raspy purr, steering that's telepathic, and brakes that can almost stop the Earth's rotation," states Car and Driver Magazine.

The Porsche Cayenne is Hot!

Porsche Cars of North America announced that sales this past October rose by 61% from the previous year, mostly due to the strong sales of the Porsche Cayenne. Wow! Porsche sold 2,647 vehicles this past October, which is up from 1,642 from the previous October. Nearly all models in Porsche’s portfolio enjoyed increases during the month of October. Leading Porsche, 1,139 Cayennes were sold in October and Panamera sales nearly doubled from last October to 747.

The Porsche Panamera Road Trip

Daniel Terdiman, a reporter for CNET, put the new 2010 Porsche Panamera to the test. He drove for more than 5,200 miles over the course of 6 weeks around the East Coast in the new Panamera 4S. Porsche 918 Spyder Packed with More Power Post Production

Can you think of anything more exciting than a mid-engine Porsche with a 500-horsepower 3.4-liter V8 and an additional 218 horsepower courtesy of two electric motors? According to a report from Autocar, Porsche is said to be enlarging the displacement of the gas-swilling engine in order to extract more power from the 918 Spyder. Once it goes into production, the 918 will sport both soft and hard tops, as well as a slightly heavier front end in order to provide adequate crash resistance. When the hybrid supercar hits the market, the 22-inch wheels will likely be downsized and side exhausts may be rerouted. Motor Trend compares the Boxster S

The June 2010 Motor Trend actually starts their article by declaring Porsche the winner. They go on to say that the other three were competing for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The superlatives were non-stop on the Boxster S.
"The Boxster S is the very best roadster you can get for the money." "But in this contest of speed, style, and top-down dominance, it wasn't even close." "So engaging to pilot, this car epitomizes automotive euphoria." Not bad quotes.
Even more amazing, the Spyder is a Boxster S taken to an even higher level purity and performance. The Spyder is lighter, lower, more powerful, and a touch more hard core. It's no wonder that the mid-engine cars from Porsche are universally praised and remain a moving target for the competition.
The labels: entry level, baby Porsche, and the politically incorrect "chick's car" couldn't be further from the truth with the exception that, yes, women drive them too.

Product comparisons

In the July issue or Car and Driver three sports cars: a Lotus Evora, a Corvette GS, and a Cayman S were compared. Shockingly, the Cayman S had a glaring flaw, brake fade. This was a "press car" with 6,000 miles.
I have seen some blatant examples of Porsche models tortured by the press. One was a GT3 with no tread on the tires after 1,000 miles. Another was a 911 Turbo with warped rotors. Evidently there are journalists with neither driving skills nor respect for machinery. It has been said that at 7/10 one can experience a car's attributes; at 9/10 one can only concentrate on survival.
Each Porsche model must pass a rigorous test of accelerating to 90% of its top speed and brake to 62 mph 25 times in a row without experiencing any fade. Porsche's brakes are legendary.
PCNA needs to inspect these cars a little more closely. While they're at it, they should examine the way some these cars are equipped. You may recall the $130,855 Panamera S without sport chrono in the March 2010 Car and Driver.
By the way, both the Cayman S and the Panamera S won their comparisons. However, like college football, running up the score does help in the rankings.

Safety First

This year marks our 28th annual Ozark Tour, a road trip for Porsches. This will be the 40th organized road trip which would include West Texas. Our safety record, while not perfect, is to be commended. In the past three years we drove over 43,000 miles per ticket- 4 speeding tickets. Last year we had 50 cars and made 48 of them invisible.

We split into groups of no more than three. The groups are determined both by drivers of similar skill sets and desires, as well as similar Porsche models. No one is asked to drive outside their comfort zone. We depart at different times and have at least 15 different routes to lunch. Spyder Impressions
